5 Brilliant Ways to Build Your Blogging Brand
So you’ve started your blog! Congratulations!
… Now what?
I get that question a lot! Starting a blog doesn’t guarantee people will be reading what you write. To gain followers, people need to know about the amazing things you’re posting, right?! In order for people to know about you, you have to identify yourself and your blog as a brand!
Ok, I’m using my marketing lingo again… So what is a brand?
Basically, your ‘brand’ is what makes you recognizable! When followers (or future followers) see your ‘brand’ they will immediately be able to recognize you and know what to expect from your page! Awesome, right?
So how do you build your brand? It’s actually not as difficult as it may sound. Just check out these 5 Brilliant ways to Build your Blogging Brand!
1. Develop Your Voice
When I first started in Journalism and Marketing, I didn’t understand what people meant when they’d say ‘find your voice.’ I had a voice, why did I need to find a new one?
What I came to find was what was referred to in the professional world as my ‘voice’ was really just my writing style. At the time I didn’t realize writing styles were different, but as I researched and began reading more from Journalists, Businesses, and Bloggers, I noticed significant differences in the way the articles read.
Developing a ‘voice’ can seem tasking, but really it’s not difficult at all! The main thing to remember is that you want your readers to be (and stay) engaged. For example, as a Lifestyle Blogger I try to type as if I’m carrying on an everyday conversation, that way my audience feels like they’re actually getting to know me, not just reading another article. I keep my sentences short, sweet, and to the point. A business reporter, on the other hand, may write with a more academic tone instead of a more conversational style.
Your brand has a lot to do with your voice. When someone is reading a series of your articles, they don’t want to feel as though a different person wrote each one. Blogs are different from newspapers and business publications because we connect with our audience. It’s difficult to connect with followers when each time they visit your site it has a new feel. Keeping your voice consistent will ensure your readers feel connected, and will likely lead to more followers!
2. Don’t be afraid of Self-Promotion
Self-Promotion can be intimidating. At least it was for me! When I decided to branch out and start my own blog, I was no longer marketing a product or someone else’s brand… this was all me, and I was terrified!
While it may be a difficult hurdle to overcome, self-promotion is the best way to grow your brand! Let others know about the great thing you have to offer!
If you offer a lift saving product, but if no one knows about it, then what good is your product?
Be confident in yourself and in your brand and you’ll have a lot of success!
3. Create a Visual Presence
Similar to self-promotion, having a visual presence can be intimidating as it requires you to put yourself out there for everyone to see. Yikes!
One thing I learned as a Marketer, however, was that a good image goes a long way! People are more enticed to read an article if an attractive image accompanies it. Creating your Visual Presence through Social Media using attractive photos can help you grow your brand faster! Don’t underestimate the power of good photography!
I know, I know, putting yourself out there to meet others is scary! I’ve talked to so many people who think all bloggers do all day is sit behind a computer and drink coffee at local coffee shops. While part of that is true (I couldn’t live without my coffee and computer), blogging is a business! And in order to grow a business, you must network!
There are lots of ways to network. Social media, conferences, Meet-Up groups, group boards and messages, etc.. The list goes on and on! What’s most important when networking is to really connect with others. Like for Like posts are fine, but make sure you’re doing more to build a strong relationship with at least a handful of fellow bloggers!
Like I said, it can be scary. The first time I wrote a private message to a fellow blogger all I could think was “They’re going to think I am such a creeper!” What I found was the exact opposite! Bloggers love to know people are reading their stuff! Now that I’m on the other end of those message, I get super excited when I receive a message from a blogger wanting to connect!
So take a deep breath, and hit send on that message you’ve been typing for 2 weeks! 🙂
5. Consistency, Consistency, Consistency!
OK, I’m gonna say it one more time… consistency!!
While working as a Marketing Manager this word was plastered on my wall! One of the easiest ways to lose a following is if they can’t recognize your product (or blog) immediately. That doesn’t mean you can’t get creative!
Consistency isn’t just using the same color font in each of your posts. While color scheme consistency is important, it’s more important that you are consistent in everything from your voice, visual presence, logo use, and even your personal photo!
One big mistake I see a lot of new business and blog owners make is that they constantly change their profile picture, or have a different picture on every social media outlet. It’s important that your readers know they’re on the right page as soon as it opens! Keeping your images consistent on every page will ensure your readers and will make you a recognizable figure!
Additionally, you want to be consistent in your writing style. Depending on your topic you might find yourself changing the way you write. Your readers come to your site and read your posts because they like the way you write! Make sure to keep your writing style consistent from post to post so readers feel they are connected to you through your posts!
